Linda Wang, Piano
Recorded in Miller Recital Hall at the Manhattan School of Music
April 17, 2009
program notes:     The work 「詠/twelve future(s)」 for solo piano was written to satisfy two criteria: a piano work that would refract to some degree the idiom of Olivier Messiaen, and a piano work where the pianist's fingers never left the keys and their feet never left the pedals. In terms of the former - Messiaen - two ideologies that the work explores are language and faith; in terms of the latter, the work attempts to employ extended piano techniques that can be found while still approaching the piano as a keyboard instrument. 「詠/twelve future(s)」, pronounced "yong/twelve futures", was commissioned by pianist Linda Wang. It is the recipient of a 2009 BMI Student Composer Award, and was a finalist for an ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award in that year.
