program notes:     Eight Figures in Still Time for solo violin is made up of eight different movements. The movements may be played in any order, and each has its own particular character. Each movement could be understood as a separate viewpoint from which one may sense the overall environment that the piece creates via combination of the eight movements; each is meant to offer a different viewpoint of the same artifact that, when viewed in combination, allows the listener, in his or her long-term memory, to comprehend the formation of a larger idiom. Since the piece exists as multiple points that never change position absolutely, but are only meant to change position relatively, this "polyphony of structures" is comparable to a dotted outline of a shape, very much like points within a constellation.
